What Is A Subluxation?
Chiropractic acknowledges that any trauma, thought, or toxin
can diminish health by causing what is known as a subluxation.
- Traumas are any accident may it be a big accident that
causes a lot of damage to your body or a slight tweak
of a muscle that doesn't seem cause any damage to
your body.
- Thoughts are any negative thoughts that lead to
increased stress. Increasing stress levels causes slight
muscle spasms that can cause the bones in your spine
to shift causing inflammation and pain.
- Toxins can be any thing from drugs to bad nutrition.
This even includes over the counter and prescription
drugs. Anything you put into your body that isn't
natural can cause damage and is considered a toxin.

The Greek words "sub" and "lux" put together mean “less than a
dislocation”. This means that a motion segment in which
alignment, movement integrity and/or physiologic function are
altered even though contact between the joint surfaces remains
intact. When alignment is altered inflammation surrounds the area
to help fix the damaged segment. This inflammation has good
and bad effects. The good effect is the healing process of the
blood helps the damaged ligaments in that area. The bad effect is
that same blood (inflammation) decreases space around the nerve
causing a pinching. Research shows that a dime's worth of
pressure on a nerve decreases its functionality by 80%. This
pinching leads to decreased nerve flow to all of the cells that the
nerve innervates. These cells could be muscle cells, major organ
cells, or any other cell in the body. This is what leads to the pain
you are feeling.

The Adjustment and Three Phases of Healing
The chiropractic adjustment is the use of a specific force in a precise direction that
helps normalize spinal function. The adjustment is fast and usually painless and takes
only minutes. It must be done repetitiously over a period of time to make a correction
and allow healing to take place. Over this same time period therapies such as soft
tissue massage or electronic muscle stimulation may be used to help speed the healing
process. Also you will be given stretches and muscle strengthening programs to
make sure that you are less likely to injure yourself again.
The three phases of healing that you will go through are initial intensive care,
corrective care and finally wellness (maintanance) care.
- Initial Intensive Care: This is when you first come in and are feeling a lot
of pain. Your symptoms are at their worst and nothing seems to make you
feel better. Visits are more frequent because there is a lot of muscle spasm
and inflammation causing your pain. Scar tissue is also being formed in the
damaged tissue. With frequent adjustments, ice and stretches you should start
to feel better usually between 2-12 treatments depending on your specific
case. With initial intensive care you come in 2-4 times per week depending on
your case until you feel 50-75% better.
- Corrective Care: This type of care is when you are feeling better but not
100% pain free. The frequency of visits decreases to between once per week
to once every other week. This is the time that your muscles, ligaments and
other tissues are returning to normal function. During this period of
decreasing pain it is still very important to ice, stretch and do your
strengthening exercises to minimize the ongoing effects of scar tissue. During
this phase of care you could get between 80-100% pain free depending on
your type of injury, how your body heals and how compliant you are with
your rehabilitation program.
- Wellness Care: This type of care is prevention. You don't have any pain
what so ever but just want to come in to prevent anything from hurting. An
ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Unfortunately
insurance companies don't believe that so wellness care is not covered. What
most patients do then is come in once every month or two to get checked for
misalignments and pay the discounted cash fee. If I don't find any
misalignments I send you on your way at no charge and in good health.
